Parting is such sweet sorrow

No, I'm not leaving the library but this is the end of 23 Things for me. Perhaps that is why I drug my feet on finishing the final thing. Perhaps because I've enjoyed the process of exploring, learning, playing that I did not want to leave it. Or maybe I'm just lazy because this wasn't a fun Web 2.0 site to visit but instead required time to put thoughts together.

The process has certainly been a long one. For me it has because I was introduced to this long before the State decided to do anything about this. I took a webinar from SirsiDynix Institute which was given by the Mother of 23 Things (called Learning 2.0 in her library system), Helene Blowers. After "attending" the webinar she gave I was so jazzed about this I called Lew Belfont - "Wouldn't this be great if we could do something like this at Howard County?". Little did I know the State would also be as jazzed about this as I was.

I hope to see this type of training/learning continued. I think it will take some folks time to shift their perception of how to learn (being told vs. exploring) but I think you can learn so much more by at least trying it out first yourself. That is generally how I learn. I am not afraid to ask questions or for help if I need it but I enjoying diving in and seeing how much I can figure out on my own. I think constantly instructing people "do step 1 like this then follow that by step 2 which must be done this way..." they miss a lot by not discovering, fumbling around and getting it right. We learn more from our mistakes than our successes.

I look forward to Learning 2.1 and beyond!

Going into Hyperdrive

Trying to finish up my 23 Things as I've been a little lax on working them lately.

I've not been a big fan of what Carolyn Brown calls "Books on Tape on CD" (back from the days when cassette was the only options and then suddenly CDs arrived...we didn't know what to call them). I know many folks will find this hard to believe but I focus too much on what's being said and don't pay attention to what I should be doing (e.g. driving!). One thing that I guess I'm "old school" about - I still like to read and not listen to books. However, I've certainly answered enough questions about both OverDrive and NetLibrary to last a life time.

For those who are hooked on these things - have you checked out Free Classic Audiobooks? StumbleUpon this the other day and thought this was really great because it does MP3 and the format for iTunes (which OverDrive doesn't do).

Finding your "Inner Lab"

Dani the wonder nut does it again! Starring in her 3rd video on YouTube. Dani is Lab mix but there have been times that my son and I have wondered about that. She loved the water but the shallow end. None of this jumping into deep end and swimming for Miss Danielle. She took months of coaxing but a couple weeks ago Patrick finally got her to swim - she even did it without him in the water. She now swims regularly so I think she finally found her Inner Lab.

YouTube is very addictive. But if you are overwhelmed by all the videos out there or how to find them - try oSkope. I've found some great humorous videos on Linux as well as on by one of my favorite comedians and his take on Star Trek.

Eddie Izzard (warning you may need subtitles as his accent is a wee bit British)

And the award goes to.....

Looking over the list of sites nominated and the winners of the SEOmoz's Web 2.0 awards I was a bit surprised at some.

  • LibraryThing only coming in 3rd in the Books section.
  • Craigslist - that's been around for ages...how did it suddenly get nominated and win no less.
  • pbWiki coming in 2nd to some no name wiki wetpaint.
  • thrilled to see Ning win 1st place in Mashups (but it isn't a mashup it is a social network) - if you haven't already checked out the Maryland 23 Things Ning - give it a go I created it!
  • Music section not including Musicovery or FineTune.com - shame on them!
  • Whoo Hoo - StumbleUpon got 2nd place - just love discovering new sites each day. Here is one that I "StumbleUpon" today - http://www.freerice.com/ - feed yourself and the world
  • Oooh - CakePHP - so maybe I can be Danny Bouman *LOL*

Google Docs etc.

Been there, done that have the t-shirt, worn it out and using it as a rag.

We've been using Google Docs here at HCL for some time now.

As for exporting as HTML - I don't need to since I know how to code in HTML, some CSS and a very tiny splattering of PHP (Heck, I'm not Danny Bouman you know!).

Sorry - move along not much to see here on this Thing.

The Mix Tape Grows Up!

This may just have usurped Musicovery as my favorite site now. And to think Musicovery usurped Woot!....well sorta. Just love making playlists that I can share with my friends, tag the artist or songs and comment as well - all very Web 2.0!

If you are interesting in my playlists I'm mlibrarianus on finetune.com

OMG the coolest site ever!

Musicovery

Clicked on my StumbleUpon toolbar that I installed the other day and was greeted with this amazing site this morning. Internet music radio that allows you to select your mood (energetic, dark, calm, positive and anything in between), choose your genre or decade .... the possibilities are endless! Also you can go to Amazon, iTunes or eBay to purchase the music if you like.

The Guild - webisode from YouTube

These are just too darn funny!

Blogs consist of 2 parts....

...and I've been busy doing the 2nd part - commenting on other blogs! I've been spending my lunch time reading my fellow 23 Thingers blogs and trying to comment. I haven't commented on everyone's yet but that is a goal I'd like to reach (we will see if I can get there before 23 Things ends).

So look around for a comment or two from me! :)

Fozzie Bear

Every time I see the word Wiki I can't help but think of Fozzie Bear from the Muppets. He would say "Woka, woka, woka" .... yeah, I know it's a stretch but for some reason Wiki sounds close to Woka and I think of him.

Anywho....I posted to the Maryland Libraries Sandbox wiki. It's not really a Wiki in the true sense of the word. To me, it's more just like people posting to a giant blog. To me a Wiki is like Wikipedia - where it is factual and people edit the pages to correct things or add more information. Most of the pages I saw on the Sandbox were like blogs - just people's opinions.

With that said - I didn't make it any better. I posted more opinion to the Favorite Dogs page. The paragraph about 3 dogs in my life and what they have given me.

Not sure I'd be the person to start a Wiki but I'd be happy to contribute to it if it was an area where I felt I had some expertise.

I know a lot of folks (including myself) pooh-pooh Wikipedia. It is not what I consider a legit site. However, it is a great place to start your researching and is quite often full of trivia that you don't get at some of the more "legit" sites. Wikis may come and Wikis may go just as long as they remind me of Fozzie Bear I'm okay.

24th 1/2 Thing - too cool!

oSkope is a very cool free online service that searches Amazon, eBay, Flickr, and YouTube (more sites to be added). The intuitive visual interface displays your results letting you browse quickly with minimal amount of paging. If you register you selected items can be saved to your account.

Amy Degroff sent this to me and within seconds I was hooked.

Web 2.0? 2.1 and beyond!

Helene Blowers, the creator of 23 Things (originally called Learning 2.0) has taken her library system beyond the number 23 - they are doing Learning 2.1.

I think a lot of staff at our library and other systems aren't quite sold on this idea of Web 2.0 or Library 2.0. To those folks, I have to say - I'm sorry but it is here to stay. Long gone are the days when a customer just wanted a good book to read or an answer to a homework question. Information staff have certainly seen their job, and the skill set needed to do it, change from just being able to find the correct paper source to give someone the correct answer to things like electronic databases, web sites and more.

When we did a survey of our customers and why they used our PACs we discovered that many of them saw it as just another service (not unlike our collection and programs). Many of our customers are already familiar with the Web 2.0 technology and in order to serve them better, staff should be familiar with the technology too.

I know change scares a lot of people. But the power lies with the individual - you have the power of choice. You can choose to ignore, run or hide from technology. It won't go away and you'll just be further behind when you are finally forced (either by necessity or otherwise) to face it. Or you can choose to embrace the fact that technology has changed every one's job (not just library staff) and the best thing is to learn it now. Learning it now gives you the edge - it helps build stepping stones to the the next technological advance.

I love how Web 2.0 has put the power of the internet into the hands of the people. No longer are "just the experts" allowed to comment, share or instruct but your average Joe who happens to know a few things too can do the same.

Power to the People!

Omnivores Unite!

I was reading a friend's blog - (she used to work for HCL but now works at Harford County and has completed 23 Things)- 'Nette 2.0. I clicked on a link to HCPL Tech Fair. In that blog I found a link to the Pew Internet & American Life Project. I've actually heard Lee Rainie, director of P.I. & A.L.P. speak several times at CIL conferences. So I was intrigued when I saw on the HCPL Tech Fair page a link to a survey they are conducting. I was curious to see how I'd fit in the grand scheme of things. Turns out I'm an Omnivore.

Funny thing is I don't fit the profile -
Who They Are
They are young, ethnically diverse, and mostly male (70%). The median age is 28; just more than half of them are under age 30, versus one in five in the general population. Over half are white (64%) and 11% are black (compared to 12% in the general population). English-speaking Hispanics make up 18% of this group. Perhaps unsurprisingly, many (42% versus the 13% average) of Omnivores are students.

I'm not young, male or a student. Guess I'm just one of a kind ;)

Take the survey and found out just where you fit in the
Pew Internet Project's Typology of Information and Communication Technology Users.

Playing with Widgets - Updated

While investigating some Widgets for my 23 Things Ning (please join if you haven't already - spread the word!) I ran across some Harry Potter widgets that I just had to have.

Since I love Woot! so much I was thrilled to find a Woot widget so I can be updated on the Woot! deal of the day.

Rolling on down the line

"Let it roll, baby, roll. Let it roll, all night long." The Doors

So gave Rollyo a try. Not quite sold on it yet.

Not sure I did it right but I created a Rollyo for lighting. We are still renovating/expanding several rooms in our house (although the light is at the end of the tunnel - no pun intended). I don't know how many other folks will use my Rollyo but it is a bunch of sites that we've liked (good prices or good selections) and even ordered from. We were not impressed with Lowe's or Home Depot and places like Annapolis Lighting or Jones Lighting are nice but expensive. We have found that ordering off the Internet is cheaper and gives us the same quality product that you would have paid extra for in the showroom stores.

Not the most exciting Rollyo but it is something near and dear to my heart right now.

It's all 23 Things fault!

After getting about half way through 23 Things I've gotten slightly hooked on this blogging bit. Still not 100% sure about it but since I was on vacation I thought - hey, why not blog it. Unfortunately, due to not always having a WiFi connection and having to fight my computer junkie 16 yo and husband for time on the laptop, I gave up the idea.

But once I got home I thought what a great way to share some of my photos and thoughts/experiences with friends and family. Saving them a huge email that would have bored them to tears. Now they can go to Blogger and read or look at the pics if they want to.

So, if any of you are interested in my holiday blog - check it out here! And remember it is all 23 Things fault.

Avada Kedavra

MERLIN's beard! Order of Merlin, third class....

Every time I see the name MERLIN I think of Harry Potter if not then King Arthur. On some odd occassions I think of my home state (Yeah, I'm from Bawlmar, Merlin, Hon!).

Actually I was recently invited to be a site supporter for MERLIN. Trying to catch up on just what that entails but I hope to help make the MERLIN site even better.

Now remember...."it's Levosah not Levosar!"

Blog baby blog

Don't know if the title of this blog is a take on Live, Baby, Live (title of an INXS live album) or what.

Well the RSS part of 23 Things was pretty simple considering I had taught classes on RSS in AquaBrowser. Setting up an RSS feed is easier than teaching a class about it. I already had several and varied RSS feeds on my bloglines account (my bloglines blog is available on the right hand side). Subscribed to Stefan Freed's blog (from BCPL) and Scott Reinhardt's blog (from CCPL) as well as our very own Alan Simpson's blog - picked 3 people who were at different stages of the "things" journey.

Now if I can only remember to check my blogs. If I still had FeedReader on my pc at work it would be easy. It popped up a message every time a blog had been updated. Not unlike the message you get when you get a new email. Nice thing about FeedReader is it is Open Source.

Perhaps I'll put it back on my machine to keep track of my fellow "thingers".

If this doesn't make you stop and think...well shame on you! (Thanks to Amy DeGroff for posting this on the Discussions Forum at Si).

A Little Bird Told Me

Heard several folks at the last Computers In Libraries mention the site Twitter. "I just updated it on Twitter"....."I'm on Twitter right now...." etc.

So being ever the curious one that I am and since we are playing around with social networks....I decided to head on over to this thing called Twitter. Still not 100% what it can do for me. Is it a floor polish and a desert topping? Does it slice, dice and julienne? Inquiring minds what to know.

Perhaps this explains it a bit better than I can. Micro-blogging??? Will we have nano-blogging next? Just insert nano into you and think a thought....the nano will do the blog for you.

So if you want to know what I'm doing...I'm mlibrarianus on Twitter.

Really cool app on Twitter - Twitter Faces (uses Google Maps).

Social Networks

Proud to say I'm part of the Library 2.0 community. A social networking site that was created with Ning. This network is for librarians and others interested in Library 2.0. Also on Ning, I belong to the Mid Atlantic Librarians network.

When someone at the Ning network couldn't understand what all the hubbub about social networking was about here was my reply:

My response to Michael would be that the appeal of these sites is based in community or in the human need to communicate, to interact, to share. I suppose not everyone has that drive but if you look at the history of the Internet and things such as IM/Chat rooms and their popularity .... well to me it wasn't a big jump from that to the social networking sites that are out there now. To me it is just a natural progression. No longer do I just talk about say my love of dogs or libraries but I can share with others pictures, videos, etc. Think of it as still a big chat room that now had AV capabilities.

Yes, you could do a search box on a MySpace page that would redirect them back to your catalog. We have that on one of our MySpace pages for our library system (we also have it on our PC4Kids site). Our Web Programmer gave our branch manger the code - you type in your search term(s) and it enters that into our AquaBrowser catalog. It is a great way to be "out there" and bring people into your site.

There are many, many possibilities for using Library/Web 2.0 and social networking. If nothing else, if it helps to bring customers to your library or library site it can't be all bad.

Another site that I'm part of is Joomla In Libraries. Joomla is the software that runs Si!

The great thing about belonging to communities like these is being ask questions of others that are experiencing what you are or have been through it and have solutions.

I hope others will see what Web 2.0 and programs like 23 Things are just a natural progression of what was established a long time ago. Change can be scary or it can be embraced and looked upon as a positive experience. It all starts with you and your viewpoint.

YouTube and Woot

Since we are suppose to blog about something tech related I was torn between the obvious and possibly the not so obvious.

Most everyone by now has heard of, been sent a link to, or possibly even uploaded to the site YouTube. While testing 2 headsets we got in in LTS, I decided to visit YouTube to make sure the audio part was working (unfortunately the microphone part was not). Ran across a cute 8 week old puppy video...so it got me thinking that maybe someone would enjoy watching my nutty puppy too!

Here is my first foray into the world of YouTube:
- my son is the videographer and it is starring Dani the wonder nut....I mean mutt.

Then I stumbled upon this - too funny!

Enough about YouTube now for something completely different......WOOT!

Huh? Actually Danny Bouman, our web programmer, introduced me to this site. Woot sells one thing a day (a different thing each day) and only one thing until it is sold out. Except for Woot Off days which I believe are the last Thursday and Friday of the month. Woot Off days are addictive (I'm serious) because as soon as one items sells out they have another up ... items can be gone in seconds so you have to keep refreshing your screen to make sure you aren't missing out on a great bargain.

Woot! generally sells technology based products for a real steal. Cool thing is there is also Wine.Woot but sadly the state of Maryland will not allow them to ship wine here. Even if you don't know what the heck Woot is selling if you just want a good laugh, read the Product Info. Don't know who writes their product descriptions but they never fail to make me chuckle. Some of them have been written in a sort of Douglas Adams style.

So if you are a bargain shopper or just looking for a good chuckle....visit Woot!

P.S. Just discovered that Woot has Shirt.Woot! Missed out on a great t-shirt for my son today going for $10.00. It had all sorts of controllers on it (from Playstation, Nintendo, X-Box, etc.) and the shirt was called sore thumbs! When will the madness end?!!!

You're Not Getting In Here Without a Pass

Playing around with another 3rd party application - FD's Toys (same place where I created the mosaic of Dani).

Think I will print this out and use it in lieu of my HCL name tag.... ;)

Dani's First Year

Dani's First Year
Originally uploaded by mlibrarianus
Decided to play around with one of the "discovery resources" on #5 Explore Flickr. This actually plays right into Thing #6 which is mashups (so this is 2 blogs in 1). Since I created one type of mashup for the Staff Intranet I thought I'd try something different - a mosaic of my sweet puppy's first year. Dani (short for Danielle) or AKA Devil Dog.

Pics from left to right:

Which one do I pick? The one of the left is soon to be known as Dani. The middle one is her brother and the sable colored one on the right is her sister who I was originally going to pick but my husband vetoed it. That's fine because Dani has turned into what he calls "a lovely little doggie".

Exploring my new home. Dani's first day home without a name just sniffing around.

Sleeping. Puppies sleep a lot and she loved to climb up on the sofa (with a little help from her human friends).

Helping Daddy. My husband building our nice shed to hold firewood and Dani thought she'd help out.

Puppy and string..what is she part cat?

Center pic - Dani has a piece of a plastic grocery bag on her nose. This is currently my wallpaper both at home and work.

Dani Queen of the tall grasses!

Dani with her new doggie bed (which she proceeded to chew to bits) and her new yellow football (it didn't last much longer).

Dani graduating from Pet Smart's puppy training.

Dani doing her famous sitting at the top of the steps but with her paws hanging over.

There's got to be some puppy chow left in here!

Dani sitting in the computer room among the remnants of chewed papers.

Santa Paws was good to her.

Thing 5 - Flickr & Live Earth London

Again another not very original title but ces't la vie. Funny that Flickr caught on so big when WebShots was one of the first sites that I knew of where you could share your photos. I remember having to keep staff from using photos from WebShots as screen savers because it also downloaded malware and caused problems with things like Netscape/Thunderbird email. Hopefully if staff discover Flickr we won't have the same problem. *sigh* Ah the life of a techie.

Ok, so I poked around a bit at Flickr.....decided I wanted to know if anyone had uploaded photos from last Saturday's big concerts. Live Earth regardless of how you feel politically about global climate change the concerts were utterly amazing. Maybe since I'm a child of the Live Aid generation this held more fascination for me. I enjoyed seeing the mix of performers. I did find it ironic that an event of this porportion had to have a HUGE carbon footprint associated with it. Hopefully, everyone there did some offsets to make up for it. But I digress....found one of many photos about Live Earth at Flickr. This one picture of the New Wembley Stadium caught my eye. I watched the concerts with my British husband. We both found it ironic that Americans have the worst carbon footprint yet the turnout (crowd) for the New York (really New Jersey) concert was nothing compared to the English (Wembley) crowd.

Supermarket 2.0

Can't get a grasp on this Web 2.0 thing? Perhaps something that is a bit more everyday

Supermarket 2.0

Can't decide if the tagging of the chicken or the comments on the milk are my favorites.

Lifelong learner

Ever discover that you are doing something all along that suddenly seems to be the latest buzz word or catch phrase? I guess that would describe me and lifelong learning. Many if not all of the habits they describe I firmly subscribe to.

I believe the day I stop learning, I die. One of my favorite sayings is "I learned something new today!" I say that with pride and it is one of the reasons I love my job. Besides the flexibility and variety it affords me I honestly do not go a day without learning something new. It may not be big (some days it is really huge) but if it is new and helps me on my path in life then I'm all for it.

I really liked the part where it said - teach you'll learn as well. As one who has done training here at Howard County Library I couldn't agree more. It never fails that someone in my class teaches me something about the subject or my teaching style or about me. I guess it is one of the reason I enjoy training so much...another opportunity to learn!

Day 1 of 23

How original is that for a title? Not very I know but since this is just a test blog I thought it best to keep it short and sweet.

I hope that what I can bring to this experience for others (and myself) is my love of technology and my ability to make it somewhat more understandable (especially for those who don't feel they are very tech savvy).

So let's get started......are you ready for some blogging!
